A side project for NOM 1533 master distiller Melly Cardenas, La Gritona offers incredible tequila that is as delicious as it is eco-friendly. Made from 100% blue agave grown in the Valle de Guadalupe in the Jalisco Highlands of Mexico.
The agave plants must be 9-10 years old before they can be harvested. Steamed cooked in an earthen over within a day of being harvested; it cooks for a full day and rests for a full day before the piñas are crushed. Once crushed, the run off liquid is naturally fermented in open steel vats. Distilled twice, it is then rested for 8 months in used American whiskey barrels.
All of the leftovers or distillation biproducts are given to local farmers to use as cattle feed. La Gritona’s unique green glass bottles are hand blown from recycled Mexican Coca Cola bottles.
Tasting Notes: Not overly sweet or barrel spiced, this Reposado is delicate and refined. Smooth and round on the palate, it shows bright and refreshing notes of bell peppers, fresh cut grass, aloe vera with subtle toasty almond and nougat elements. Not overly hot on the finish, this soft and refined tequila is perfect for sipping neat or mixing in cocktails!
