?Being Norwegian, I am naturally a huge fan of glogg, Nordic for a mulled wine made with fruits, spices and more often than not, port and brandy, and is a staple in Scandinavian homes. It is enjoyed as an aperitif but also goes particularly well with ginger cookies (?pepperkaker? in Norwegian). Traditionally offered during the holidays and cold-weather months, this spicy, aromatic tipple is served warm to arriving guests in Scandinavian countries, a gesture of hospitality, and an effective way of ?breaking the ice?! This is the spirit behind Hetta, which means ?to heat? in Swedish. Creator Darren Davidowich, a real estate developer located in Rhinebeck of the Hudson Valley in New York, was inspired by an Old Norwegian family recipe of his sister-in-law?s. ?It?s an American twist on a Nordic glogg,? Davidowich says. Hetta gl?gg is certified as a New York farm product because it is made from 75 percent or more New York grapes, but it?s entirely different from all other locally made wines, beers or distilled spirits. In a vintage Rhinecliff storefront brick building, he starts with a port wine from the Finger Lakes? Swedish Hill Winery - and adds cinnamon, orange peel, cardamom and raisins. Hetta is then stirred and steeped for 10 days. Then a brandy from Clear Creek Distillery in Oregon goes in, to bring the concoction up to 21.9% alcohol by volume. Davidowich says they are currently searching for a source for New York brandy. Although gl?gg is traditionally served warm, cold and refreshing variations are also delicious. Davidowich recommends muddling peppermint, like you might muddle spearmint for a mojito, and serving the Hetta over that - and some ice, of course.
