AN HISTORIC SPIRIT NOW AVAILABLE Until last year, Becherovka, an iconic herbal liqueur from the Czech Republic, was a rare sight in U.S. stores and bars. Although relatively new to the scene in this country, the spirit has existed for over 200 years and consists of a blend of 20 botanicals. Originally the savory spirit was an attempt by a Czech apothecary and an English physician at creating the ?elixir of life?. Only two people are trusted with the recipe at any time. They produce the herb and spice mixture on a weekly basis, and then infuse it into the base alcohol. Once blended, the spirit is aged in oak barrels from Moravia, the Czech Republic?s wine growing region. The result is a spirit golden in color and has the distinct flavor of cinnamon, anise, cloves, and ginger. Whether you you enjoy your drinks slightly bittersweet with some spice to it, or are tired of those coconutty, sweet cocktails that typically come along with summer - try Becherovka! Becherovka (Becher?s Bitters) and is typically enjoyed neat straight from the freezer. Alternatively, it tastes delicious in cocktails, or with just a splash of ginger beer or tonic water with a slice of lemon. Many also enjoy it as an accompaniment to beer or a hot coffee. THE SPIRIT OF PRAGUE 1 oz Becherovka 1 oz Dark Rum 2 oz pineapple juice ? oz lime juice ? oz simple syrup Small handful of mint Splash club soda Muddle the mint with the simple syrup and lime juice, add fresh ice and the remaining ingredients except the club soda. Shake well and pour into highball glass filled with fresh ice, and top off with club soda. Na zdravi! Tasting Note: Golden hue, with aromas and flavors of honey, clove, ginger and cinnamon. Sweet upon entry, the spirit finishes bittersweet with a touch of spice. Recommended
